If there’s anything I love more than books, it’s holiday themed books! Back when I was teaching, I collected tons of book for every holiday imaginable. I loved changing out my read aloud shelf to match the current season. Now I still love sorting through my bookcases each holiday and pulling out all of the books that go along with it. I put them in a basket in our homeschool room and encourage the kids to read them whenever they have a free moment. Sometimes they do, but more often they “forget.” Luckily, I really enjoy reading aloud to my children, even as they’re growing up, and I can usually get at least two of them to sit and listen while I read. As Thanksgiving is approaching, I rounded up all of my Turkey Day books and realized I have so many that I love. I appreciate a mix of (fairly) historically accurate books and just for fun reads (I’m looking at you, Pinkalicious!), so I tried to narrow it down to 10 favorites. Once I got to 12, I just couldn’t cut any more, so here is my list of My 12 Favorite Thanksgiving Read Alouds for Children.
The Thanksgiving Story by Alice Dalgiesh
I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie (Picture Puffins) by Alison Jackson
The Story of the Pilgrims (Pictureback(R)) by Katharine Ross
The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks (Berenstain Bears/Living Lights) by Jan Berenstain
Pinkalicious: Thanksgiving Helper by Victoria Kann
Cranberry Thanksgiving (Cranberryport) by Wende Devlin
‘Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving (Bookshelf) by Dav Pilkey
The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy Skarmeas
Thanksgiving Is… by Gail Gibbons
A Plump And Perky Turkey by Teresa Bateman
Run, Turkey, Run! by Diane Mayr
The Berenstain Bears Thanksgiving Blessings (Berenstain Bears/Living Lights) by Mike Berenstain
These are my favorites in no particular order (because I’m indecisive) and each are linked up to Amazon. These are affiliate links, which means I receive a tiny commission if you make a purchase using these links. Just so you know. I plan to read one book a day starting today, which means I’ll finish on Thanksgiving Day. Not being able to narrow it down to just 10 worked out perfectly, huh? Now that’s some good planning! Happy reading!!!
